Don't know why the attractive cover of this book isn't featured in the main Amazon look-up list. This Prairie State Books edition is an excellent, quality edition. The introduction lays it on way too heavy to almost force the reader, in advance, to love and worship this book. In fact, the intro isn't really worth much and could easily be skipped altogether.
This book is very well written. A real joy to me since the previous book I'd read happened to be so badly and verbosely written. Unfortunately, like many wives of high-ranking officials, the author is over-flowing with goody-two-shoes sentiments. Because of this I got sick of this book about half way through.
This book is still well-worth reading and contains many interesting details about life among the Indians in those early days.

WAUBUN The "Early Day" in the NorthWest Prairie State Books Juliette M Kinzie 9780252062322 Books Reviews
This is a key document of early Illinois and Wisconsin history written with flair by an observant and lively woman. The Univesity of Illinois Press edition, 1992, with Nina Baym's introduction. Unabridged trade paperback, 266 pp, reprinting the Derbey Publishing edition of 1856.
Kinzie, married to the only US government Indian Agent in the area, was an erudite easterner who found herself living at Lake Winnebago in what now is Wisconsin. A frequent traveller between Wisconsin and Chicago, she describes the pleasures and hardships of frontier life, the days of Chicago when the civilian population numbered less than 50, relations between Indians and white men, the Sauk War of 1832, the world of fur trading, the slow growth of Chicago towards metropolis, and incorporates several Indian folktales into her narrative.
"An eastern woman, Kinzie was imbured with the comanticism of the frontier, but also had a sharp eye for detail and a fine sense of humor."
I chanced upon awareness of this book and was pleased the local library system had it. I had seen an article about John Kinzie, Indian Agent at Fort Winnebago on the portage between the Wisconsin and Fox riverways, the long water route between Green Bay and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. I learned that Juliette Kinzie had written a memoir of her years in Wisconsin.
Juliette married John Kinzie in August, 1830, in Detroit and a month later they traveled to Fort Winnebago. (Mrs. Kinzie's descriptions of all her travel segments are interesting.) John Kinzie had previously lived and worked with Indians and they highly respected him. The Kinzies were at Ft. Winnebago for three years, after which they left for Chicago where the Kinzies had important properties.
Juliette Kinzie describes her interesting life at Ft. Winnebago. From time to time there were "Indian scares," notably during the phase of the Black Hawk War when the Sauk Indians were retreating from American military and the safety of the fort was uncertain.
An extensive and captivating part of the book covers a long trip by horseback from Ft. Winnebago via the Madison, WI, region to Chicago. The reader wonders if this endeavor will be succcessful without tragedy. Juliette Kinzie's memoir is interrupted in chapters 18-20 to give a narrative obtained from other persons of "The Massacre at Ft. Dearborn," Chicago, during the War of 1812. The fort's commander dithered about his evacuation and most of the soldiers were killed. The John Kinzie, Sr. family survived through the assistance of friendly Indians . The memoir resumes with the tale of the trip back to Ft. Winnebago from Chicago, again with some difficult travel conditions. The necessary hospitality of isolated settler families and Indians along such an excursion is heartening.
A half-dozen interesting engravings from Juliette Kinzie's watercolors grace the book.
I found Wau-Bun an enjoyable and informative book. The Kinzies' life in that era is well-described.
Fascinating account of pioneer life in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Well written and lively with a surprisingly progressive attitude toward native people and traditions.
Great historical history from a woman's perspective of the early 1800's.
This is a must read for anyone interested in early history of the Midwest.
